Even though Thessaloniki is the second biggest city in Greece, its city center is compact and
easily walkable. Like an “open museum”, every corner reveals parts of its rich history and
culture while you get the essence of a modern, vibrant city, that will surprise you. We will unveil
the history of all the different Empires and minorities that influenced Thessaloniki.
From its establishment to the Roman and Byzantium Era, the Ottoman occupation, and finally to the city’s liberation, connecting past to present lifestyle, explaining how Thessaloniki keeps such a multicultural and unique identity.
Focusing on our Jewish heritage, we will pass from all the remaining sites and monuments of a community that used to thrive in Thessaloniki, from the 15th century until its almost total extinction during WWII. You will understand why Thessaloniki used to have the name “Madre d’ Israel” and “Jerusalem of the Balkans”. History combined with our family’s narratives will give
you a spherical knowledge of how this community settled in the city, flourished, and finally almost disappeared, with only a few survivors returning.
During the tour, we will explore different areas of the city, the promenade, small districts, central squares, monumental buildings, galleries, cute cafeterias, interesting restaurants and tavernas, the traditional food markets as well as the historical Modiano market which was lately renovated
and reopened its doors to the public.
This walking tour is an ideal head start and an excellent orientation that will give you the knowledge and confidence to continue perfectly exploring the city. By the end of the tour, we will provide you with all the tips and secrets on where to eat great food, listen to Greek music, what
to taste, venues for your night entertainment, and other activities.
